In Greece, a notary public (symvolaiografos) is a distinct and highly regulated legal profession, holding a far more substantive role than the largely ceremonial notary found in common-law countries. Greek notaries are law-degree holders who have passed a dedicated state notarial exam and draft and authenticate legally binding contracts under their own regional notary association, separate from the bar. Their involvement is legally required for major legal matters, including real estate transactions, company formation, and wills.
